Historic Maison Maitland has gone through a few changes in its nearly two-hundred years, but perhaps none as exciting as its carriage house retrofit, which will bring luxurious villas and bespoke, European-inspired experiences to the stone village of Maitland, Ontario.
“I want my guests to feel like they’ve been whisked away to a countryside manor in Europe,” says owner Cynthia Peters, “…and indulge in a luxurious, sophisticated getaway that they may otherwise only get to experience in say, France. Maison Maitland gives guests an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with food, friends, or themselves in a gorgeous setting that fuels creativity—culinary, or otherwise.”
Nestled along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, Maison Maitland began as The Maplehurst Manor and Carriage House in 1827. A beautiful Georgian-style manor, it was completed by Lord George Longley, a farmer and political figure in Upper Canada. Today, Maison Maitland is proudly owned and operated by Chef Cynthia Peters, who offers popular, customizable cooking classes in its state-of-the art chef’s kitchen.
Staying at Maison Maitland
The vision is simple, really: luxurious countryside getaways, rooted in a love of food. “That’s why it was important that the villas not just be beautiful, but also functional with fully equipped kitchens—so my guests can celebrate their love of cooking independently, between trips to the farmer’s market or attending a cooking class,” says Cynthia.
The two Villas, Chardonnay and Chablis, provide the perfect backdrop for groups of friends looking for unique stays and experiences punctuated by thoughtful touches. Each Villa draws on Cynthia’s European travels and is uniquely finished with carefully curated furnishings, art, and amenities that you would normally expect to find in a boutique hotel. Contemporary, open entertaining spaces accented by original beam ceilings offer unique ambiance, while private patios beckon you to dine al fresco under the stars. In these Villas, every detail has been considered and taken care of.
It’s all about attention to detail at Maison Maitland, where a host of top-tier comforts create an irresistible hideaway: Bonjour Baskets and Boards loaded with Cynthia’s favourite local treats and products await guests’ arrival, while signature hand and body soaps await them ensuite. Top it off with complimentary croissants each morning (accompanied by signature Maison Maitland breakfast blend black tea by Pluck as well as locally roasted coffee), and you’ll wonder how you ever started the day without one.
